An essential reference for any health professional that incorporates the use of herbs in their practice, this text is also very accessible to the lay person. Well organized and written in a clear and concise manner, it comes complete with a Materia Medica that includes 192 different medicinal herbs (including the parts of the plant that are used, active constituents, indications, dosage recommendations and contraindications), as well as sections describing the properties and actions of different types of herbs, a dictionary of related terms, formulas for specific health conditions and body systems, directions for harvesting plants and making a variety of herbal preparations, and charts for figuring correct dosages.

Of particular interest to the birth practitioner are specific formulas for the female reproductive system (including the “Mother’s Cordial”—a formula “…specifically made for the last 3 weeks of pregnancy as a partus preparator”) and a chart comparing the actions of the various female reproductive herbs in different phases of a woman’s hormonal life.

Written by a naturopathic physician and herbalist with 25 years of experience, this volume makes a valuable addition to the library of both the experienced practitioner and novice herbal enthusiast alike.

Reviewer Teri Myers is a budding farmer, holistic health counselor and licensed massage therapist, as well as the acting managing editor for Midwifery Today magazine.
